Clinical Application of Ankle Brachial Index in Patients with Stroke

Abstract
Background: Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease and it is known that peripheral artery disease (PAD) is more frequent in patient with Stroke. Recently, the ankle brachial index (ABI) has been receiving attention as a non-invasive method to find PAD. In this study, we measured ABI to determine the concomitant presence of PAD in patients with Stroke.

Methods: ABI was measured in 40 patients with Stroke and 20 controls without medical history of any atherosclerotic disease such as CAD, PAD, and cerebrovascular accident (CVA). 40 patients included 20 patients with hemorrhage and 20 patients with cerebral infarction. We compared the value of ABI among those groups.

Results: There was no significant difference in ABI between the hemorrhage groups and the normal group, but in the infarction group ABI was significantly less than the normal group. There was significant difference in the severity of ABI among cerebral infarction group and two control groups (P£¼0.05). And the value of ABI was not correlated with the degree of internal carotid stenosis (P£¼0.05).

Conclusion: A strong relationship between the degree of stenosis in CVA and PAD was demonstrated quantitatively by ABI measurement. A decrease in ABI in Cerebral infarction maybe a risk factor for PAD.
